“Chopin is a composer who has been with me since I started playing the piano as a child. In Japan, where I grew up, it is impossible to avoid Chopin’s music! He is one of the most popular composers for everybody, and all pianists start playing and getting to know his music from a very young age. Therefore, he becomes an essential part of your life very naturally. I have wanted to record the complete Preludes for a long time. It is always very interesting to approach works like this that are conceived as a whole – like the 24 Bach Preludes and Fugues or the Debussy Preludes. Each prelude is individual, and each is in a different tonality so the colour and characters are completely different, and as the structure of each individual prelude is relatively open there is a lot of freedom for interpretation.” – Aimi Kobayashi

“The piano is my best friend because I can share all my feelings and the secrets that I can not tell anyone.” There’s probably no sweeter way to describe a connection to one’s instrument. However, since childhood, 25-year-old Japanese-born Aimi Kobayashi has been deeply connected not only to the piano, but also to the Polish-French pianist Chopin. “In Japan, where I grew up, it is impossible to avoid Chopin’s music! He is one of the most popular composers for everybody, and all pianists start playing and getting to know his music from a very young age.”

It has long been her dream project to record the Préludes in their entirety. Now her dream is coming true, and the pianist is releasing the 24 Préludes – along with other piano works by Chopin – on Warner Classics. Following on from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, the 24 pieces create a self-contained unity while at the same time are characterized by enormous harmonic and motivic diversity, and Kobayashi manages to bring it all together.
Each Prelude is in a different key and accordingly differs in character, tonal coloration, and dynamics. While the pianist plays melancholic, somber passages in a soulful and sensitive manner, she is in no way overpowered by the powerful, passionate works. Kobayashi recognizes the various extremes of Chopin and surrenders to them – just like she does with the piano, her best friend.

Following her 2018 debut album of works by Chopin and Liszt, she now continues her romantic series on Warner Classics with fresh energy and a new understanding of Chopin’s music.
