Born in Prague in 1770, Anton Reicha moved to Bonn in 1785, where he played violin and flute in the court orchestra, along with Ludwig van Beethoven. The two, who were the same age, struck up a close friend- ship, and initially it seemed that Reicha was the more successful of the two, as already in 1787, he managed to get his first symphony and several smaller works performed in Bonn. By contrast, Beethoven worked on and abandoned a symphony in c minor during this time, and his two large-scale cantatas from 1790 do not seem to have been performed during his lifetime. Reicha, however, was also far more academically inclined and entered the University of Bonn in 1789, although possibly due to familial pressure, whereas Beethoven left for Vienna in 1792. They would not meet until 1802, by which time Reicha had lived in Hamburg, studied mathematics, philosophy, and composition, as well as the best methods of teaching it. As a result of these studies, much of Reicha’s output blurs the boundaries between the musical, the didactic, and the theoretical, and he had a profound effect on his contemporaries, including Beethoven.
