In today’s terms, Thomas Müntzer was a liberation theologian. A few years before his violent death, the ordained priest entered into a marriage with a former nun (like Martin Luther), committed himself to helping the needy and ultimately took an active part in the Peasants’ War, which displeased the great reformer as much as the secular rulers: in the end, the spokesman for the oppressed was sent to the execution block in 1525. May 27 marks the 500th anniversary of the day of his beheading. To mark the occasion, the five-piece vocal ensemble amarcord presents two works that Müntzer created in the course of his liturgical reform: the first German-language Christmas mass and “Amt” and Mette for Easter. The controversial spirit translated the texts from Latin into German in the spirit of the Reformation and set them to traditional choral melodies.
