The Nuremberg pianist Andreas Feith is known in the south German jazz scene as a busy Sideman in various Settings. With his energetic playing he shapes numerous band sounds, for example those of the Christoph Beck quartet or the Rebecca Trescher Tentett. Now the 33-year-old is releasing his long-awaited debut as a Bandleader with the album “Surviving Flower” recorded by Bayerischer Rundfunk and shows with varied compositions and Standards how exciting Modern Jazz sounds today. On the one hand, this is due to the stylistically confident ability to improvise, which Andreas Feith proves in narrative impressive arcs. On the other hand, the gripping and interacting playing style with which his highly esteemed companions from Cologne, Martin Gjakonovski on Bass and Silvio Morger on drums, interact at all times is surprising. “How they maintain precision and communication even in moments of the highest rhythmic tension and how the jazz tradition always remains palpable even in experimental moments of ecstasy has always fascinated me.”says Feith, who is taking up a position as lecturer for jazz piano and music theory at the University of music Nuremberg in the winter semester 20/21.
A room, a recording! The joy of playing live Jazz and boiling post-bop can be felt directly in this recording Session, as well as chamber music intimacy in soulful passages. As a Special Guest, tenor saxophonist and Echo Award winner Lutz häfner puts blunt “fragrance notes” on “Surviving Flower”. “I played with Lutz for the first time at a concert with Charly Antolini shortly before the Recording and I knew immediately that I wanted him to be there in my more modern context. The meeting in the Studio turned out to be a playful revelation for all of us. I have never felt so much energy in a room!”, enthuses the keyboard artist Andreas Feith. With so much energy, virtuosity and joy in playing, it is no surprise that the four of them were chosen with the Rough Mixes to the final of the new German jazz prize 2020 (which unfortunately had to be cancelled because of Corona). Whether live or canned: This Formation is an experience!
