The composer Franz Schmidt (1874-1939) is considered one of the last Austrian late Romantics: his music is characterized by a distinctive personal tonal language with subtle harmonizations. To mark the 150th anniversary of his birth, Andreas Jetter (cathedral organist at Chur Cathedral) is launching a complete recording of Franz Schmidt’s organ works. Under the motto “Silver Shine”, Jetter presents two important works from 1924 in the second installment: Firstly, the Prelude and Fugue in E flat major, which is one of the largest organ pieces ever due to its playing time alone. Secondly – in marked contrast – the Toccata in C major, a rather short and, by Schmidt’s standards, uniquely virtuosic organ work. The chorale prelude “Der Heiland ist erstanden” and the Prelude and Fugue in A major date from the composer’s late creative period. The latter is also known as the “Christmas Pastoral”, which beautifully describes the character of the composition in its serene calm, intimacy and beauty. Vol. 2 was recorded on the “Monumental Organ” by Josef Behmann in the parish church of St. Martin, Dornbirn / Vorarlberg, which was built in 1927 / 28 and has been carefully restored to its original state without any changes.
