The collaboration with Shabaka Hutchings (including Sons Of Kemet) since the previous album “The Rich Are Only Defeated When Running For Their Lives” (2021) led to the collaboration with musician, composer and producer Dave Okumu, who is best known as the singer of the Mercury Prize-nominated band The Invisible and has worked as a session musician for greats such as Grace Jones and Amy Winehouse. As a co-writer and co-producer, Okumu has been active for Adele, Terri Walker and Matthew Herbert, among others. The magic and alchemy of his production style enriches “Rowing Up River To Get Our Names Back” with subtle sounds and deep layers, resulting in a contemporary sound that perfectly showcases Anthony’s Afrofuturistic messages. Talking jazz poetry in the spirit of Gil Scott Heron, jazz, soul, hip hop and Caribbean vibes still form the cornerstones of the unmistakable Anthony Joseph style – which once again moves to a unique level with this album. A second part of this album is scheduled for release in 2025!
