The new ATMA Classique recording Prokofiev: Sonatas for Flute and Piano with Ariane Brisson, flute, and Philip Chiu, piano highlights qualities that both unite and contrast two great works by Sergey Prokofiev: the Sonata for Flute and Piano in D Major, Op. 94, and the Sonata for Violin and Piano in F Minor, Op. 80. Both composed during the Second World War, each piece reflects this terrible era of humanity, which unfortunately still resonates today.“The Sonata in D Major, Op. 94 by Prokofiev is one of the most beloved works for flute and piano among flutists, and with reason: its rich, nuanced writing makes it a masterpiece in the repertoire, and its highly demanding character (registers, nuances, virtuosity, duration) places it among the most masterly works written for the flute. The Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 1 in F Minor, Op. 80, transcribed for flute and piano, contrasts with the Sonata in D Major and is far more complex, both in harmony and form.”
