Asynchrone” by Fredéric Soulard and Clément Petit celebrates the protean creativity of composer, producer and performer Ryuichi Sakamoto, best known for his soundtracks to Hollywood films such as ‘The Last Emperor’ by Bernardo Bertolluci or ‘The Revenant’ by Alejandro González Iñárritu, less for his leading role in the great innovations of electronic and ambient music at the end of the 70s’ or for his colossal work which mixes acoustic instruments, synthesizers or ‘field recording’.The duo is less attached to reproducing verbatim extracts from this repertoire than to drawing inspiration from Sakamoto’s freedom, his mystique, his ease in drawing inspiration as much from Debussy as from Kraftwerk. The attraction is easily explained by the paths of the two protagonists. Just like Sakamoto, they each have a solid classical training – piano and violin for Soulard, cello for Petit – which then led to multiple experiences both as instrumentalists and as composers, producers and sound engineers in styles ranging from jazz to electronic music, African….
They thus strive to reshuffle the cards between the lyricism of European post-romanticism, repetitive contemporary music, krautrock, no wave, etc., in a mixture of timbres and textures that blurs the boundaries between electro and acoustic, bulimia of contemplative styles and minimalism. “Asynchronous”, more than a tribute to a frozen work, is a tribute to creative freedom.
