Distinguished as “the next generation of French pianists”, Bella Schütz has chosen Bach and Chopin for her first recording. The young Bach of the Toccatas and the Chromatic Fantasy, and the mature Chopin, with the Nocturnes, the Fantasy and the Barcarolle – a singular association, where the divergences all the more emphasize the meeting points of the two composers’ imaginations.
Rather than looking at these pieces from a historical perspective, Bella Schütz invites us to consider them as absolute works, evolving outside their classification, outside their category, to better appreciate what links them: fantasy and improvisation, encapsulated in a virtuosity that is never gratuitous and in which light and darkness converse ceaselessly.
