With this audiophile edition, the Deutsche Grammophon, on the occasion of the 30th Death of Herbert von Karajans, the legendary recordings of the symphonies 1-6 by Pyotr Ilyitsch Tchaikowski. In addition to the 4 CDs, the high-quality edition also includes a 24-bit / 96 kHz remastering on a Blu-ray audio disc. Although Karajan recorded the last three symphonies together with the Berlin Philharmonic many times, he held back until the late 1970s with recordings of the symphonies 1-3. The reason why these early symphonies sound so fresh is undoubtedly that the Berlin Philharmonic played this repertoire significantly less often, especially notable is the intricacies of orchestral sound worked out to perfection. The cycle recorded at the Philharmonie from October 1975 to February 1979 with the Berlin Philharmonic under Karajan is complemented on Blu-ray audio disc by the Slavic March and the Capriccio Italy, both recordings taken in October 1966 at the Jesus Christ Church. The first-class box edition is rounded off by a 32-page booklet with an essay by Thomas Kohlhase in the languages English and German.
