Alt rock legend Bob Mould returns with his 2025 album. The legendary former frontman of Husker Du and Sugar delivers 11 slices of anthemic, emotional driving alt rock. Featuring singles ‘Here We Go Crazy’, ‘When Your Heart Is Broken’ and ‘Breathing Room’ the album finds Bob on top form.At 64, Bob Mould sounds remarkably unchanged by time. In fact, he sounds positively great on new songs like the title track of Here We Go Crazy, the onetime Hüsker Dü frontman’s 16th solo record. Heavy and full—and loaded with classic Mould hooks—it doesn’t feel so far from Black Sheets of Rain or his work with Sugar, and showcases all the great aspects of his voice: reach-for-the-skies power, hushed and emotive, biting. Mould has described using the song to open the album as “trying to sort of set this vast open space for people.” But it’s not unfamiliar territory. There are other Sugar-y moments here, too, like the excellent power-pop jangle “When Your Heart Is Broken”; it has such a Mould bridge, and the guitar tone is as immediately recognizable as his voice is. (“That’s an instant classic for me, right? Mid-tempo, super-pop catchy guitars with super-depressing lyrics,” he recently told AllMusic of the song. “That’s sort of my specialty, I guess.” Yes, sir.) “Hard to Get”—with its wail-along punk chorus and catch-your-breath breakdowns—is Hüsker Dü-ish. The strident acoustic guitar of his solo debut Workbook makes an appearance on “Lost or Stolen” (as do familiar lyrical themes: “At the bottom of my dark black soul/ There’s a reflection/ And what I see is where I am right now/ Am I living on the edge of collapse?”). There’s a hard-nosed ballad (“Thread So Thin”) and an absolute cascade of guitar power; angular “Neanderthal” finds Mould racing through the verses like a 25-year-old. As always, most of these delightful little capsules clock in at under three minutes. And, more than ever, you can hear Mould’s influence on bands like Foo Fighters—particularly on the hammering percussion and soaring bridge of “You Need to Shine” and the flexed-muscle riffs of “Sharp Little Pieces” and the “Fur Mink Augurs.” – Shelly Ridenour
