Hearing guitarist Sean Shibes Bach recital, recorded in Delphians fifteenth-century Scottish venue, Baroque violinist Bojan Cicic was inspired during the first lockdown to begin recording Bachs iconic Partitas and Sonatas. Amid the gloom of the pandemic and restrictions on performances, Cicic travelled north when allowed to explore the intense rigours of Bachs fugues and shining virtuosity of the Partitas fast movements. Dedicated to his late violin professor and with a booklet essay written by Mahan Esfahani, for Bojan Cicic the making of this recording in the snowbound Scottish countryside has been his greatest career highlight a journey for him from darkness into light.There is something both wonderful and scary about performing music for solo violin, something newly popular since the Covid lockdowns. I’m losing count of the new recordings of the Belgian virtuoso Ysaÿe’s six show-off sonatas. Now, the Croatian-born baroque violin specialist Bojan Cicic comes blazing in with Bach’s more magisterial sextet: three sonatas plus three partitas, magnificently played on an Italian instrument almost 20 years older than the music itself.

Completed in manuscript in 1720, the pieces vary in mood between courtly dances, big fugal workouts, sorrowful beauties, and statuesque splendour. Avoiding some violinists’ febrile interpretations, Cicic likes to keeps his dignity, though that doesn’t stop his presto movements from being dizzying. His double-stopped flourishes are impressive, too.

Every note is enhanced, moreover, by the friendly acoustic of Delphian’s favourite Midlothian recording venue, Crichton Collegiate Church (15th century in origin but much bashed about by history). I can’t recall another recent recording where the lingering resonance of the music’s final notes has been so magical. The end result is an album that splendidly showcases Bach’s special pleasure: music that engages both heart and head, and leaves us humbled, disarmed, and uplifted. –The Times – 5*
