The Boston Symphony Orchestra is one of the leading orchestras in the United States in the field of academic music. Based in Boston. It was founded in 1881 at the expense of philanthropist Henry Lee Higginson. According to the tradition established in American music criticism, it belongs to the top five symphony orchestras of the USA (the so-called “Big Five”).The peculiarity of the Boston Orchestra is its peculiar double structure: along with the main orchestra, there is (since 1885) a Boston Orchestra of Popular Music performing a lighter repertoire, consisting mostly of the same musicians (minus the most significant and highly paid “first consoles”), and at an early stage (before 1930) also led by the same chief conductor, this duality is connected with the desire of the founder of the orchestra, Higginson, to promote light orchestral music. This structure was later borrowed from the Boston Orchestra by some other American orchestras.
The heyday of the Boston Symphony Orchestra is primarily associated with 25 years of work under the direction of Sergei Koussevitsky. Koussevitsky increased the popularity of the orchestra through numerous concerts on the radio, worked hard to enrich the repertoire, including by ordering music to outstanding contemporary composers: for example, by order of the Boston Orchestra for its 50th anniversary, Igor Stravinsky’s “Symphony of Psalms” and Sergei Prokofiev’s 4th Symphony were written on the material of the ballet “Prodigal son”[1]. This tradition has been preserved in the future: Henri Dutilleux, Andrzej Panufnik, Elliot Carter, John Corigliano and others wrote specially for him to commemorate the round dates in the history of the orchestra and on other occasions. Koussevitzky also established in 1936 the annual summer concerts of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Lenox, Massachusetts, which later grew into the Tanglewood Music Festival and the Tanglewood Music Center, opened in 1940, one of the most important summer music schools in the United States.
