Cantata Collective, an ensemble “of San Francisco early music luminaries” (San Francisco Chronicle) inaugurates a major series of J. S. Bach’s choral works with a live recording of the composer’s St. John Passion. With celebrated conductor Nicholas McGegan, the toast of today’s new generation of vocal soloists and a three-to-a-part chamber choir, the Cantata Collective conveys the emotional intimacy and dramatic power of this monumental passion in a highly polished performance that led Early Music America to implore: “To the excellent musicians of Cantata Collective: More Bach Please!”The Cantata Collective choir on this recording of Bach’s St. John Passion, BWV 245, has three singers per part, probably a bit fewer than Bach would have considered ideal. The players are mostly veterans of the San Francisco Bay Area’s early music scene. Yet this is far from being a minimalistic, clipped historical instrument recording. The live sound engineering is marvelous, making the choir sound like a much larger group (there is no applause) and defining big spaces where the singers have room to define the text closely. McGegan’s recording is nearly ten minutes longer than average, but there is never a feeling that the music drags. Instead, the effect is meditative, giving a sermon-like feel. The soloists are not virtuosi, but they enter into the spirit of the performance beautifully. Sample the work of countertenor Aryeh Nussbaum in, for instance, “Von den Stricken” with its absorbing interplay with (and between) the oboe and oboe da caccia. The texts are sculpted out with absolute clarity, notwithstanding that there isn’t a native German speaker in the bunch, and no language coach is credited. This is a somewhat unorthodox St. John Passion, but for those wanting to approach the work anew and think it through, it may be just the ticket.
