The music Charles Mingus and his group recorded during his groundbreaking sessions for Candid Records in 1960 produced three of the most revered jazz albums of the era. “Incarnations” is a new masterpiece, carefully crafted from rare and unreleased material from those sessions, and proudly joins the canon of Mingus masterpieces. All but one of the tracks are from the November 11, 1960 sessions compiled by Mingus and producer Nate Hentoff. The date was split into two halves: a Mingus-only date with a six-piece band expanded to an octet for two additional tracks, and a partial reunion of a collective that had formed the previous July in opposition to George Wein’s Newport Jazz Festival. (This collective, which called itself The Jazz Artist Guild, released the album “Newport Rebels” on Candid in 1961). Particularly noteworthy here is a piece recorded during the Mingus sessions on October 20, 1960. It is a previously unpublished piece with the title “All The Things You Are (All.)”. The piece, which was found on a tape containing material from these two dates in the fall of 1960, has its roots in a kind of Tatum version of “All the Things You Are” that Mingus had previously recorded in various contexts.
