Whether in literature, architecture, painting or music, many sources and works of art from Brittany are noticed, studied and admired around the world. In music, the Breton tradition is the junction of numerous always renewed influences: those of the different peoples who came to settle, religious or pagan festivals which punctuated the life of the populations, drawing certain sources from work in the fields or even to give heart to the work of the men who left on their ships but also inspired by landscapes, moors and the sea… Breton has always sang, played, danced, prayed and passed on this living heritage from generation to generation. In this region, Celtic influences and traditional music are well known. And today, we are rediscovering entire sections of a little-known heritage. Whether they are composers of scholarly or classical music from Brittany; or songs of pure tradition and oral transmission, there is still a world to rediscover. Some ancestors have transmitted these traditions to us and it is our turn to take part in this relay and to preserve and bring to life the substance and the harmonies of these songs from our countries and but also those from further afield that we hum in our homes. house always under the patronage of the Virgin who protects a land surrounded by the sea…
The little singers of the Children’s Choir of Brittany and the Maîtrise de Vannes invite us to plunge by candlelight into an older time perhaps, where we sing while waiting for the arrival of Little Jesus to warm our souls. heart and soul during the long, cold winter nights. Around a fire, the children take turns singing a cappella or accompanied by a drum, an older one gets up and takes up the harp and when the time comes they all gather in the village church to chant in one joyful choir, the hymns of the elders and the prayer of the God who comes to save all.
This disc offers an atypical journey through Breton lands where young voices perform in French, Breton, Latin and Occitan; an imaginary and contrasting Christmas Eve which will make you discover new riches from a repertoire of the Nativity that we think we already know so much. From our collections and harmonizations, this disc features songs from the country of Vannes, Rennes, Redon or Dol accompanied by traditional Christmases and rearranged by Joseph Roucairol, Christian Couchevellou, Jean langlais and Jean-Michel Noël.
