Small masterpiece with great potential-the new organ in the Kleine Kirche Karlsruhe.
What is considered “small”, is often underestimated. The fact that scarcity also inspires optimization, that reduction and compression can lead to a higher quality level – that “small” in particular can also be particularly “fine”, often remains unrecognized. Whatever rhyme one may make to the new, comparatively small organ in the small church in the heart of Karlsruhe, to underestimate it would be a great mistake. Because the instrument created by Orgelbau Lenter offers a synthesis of astonishing sound volume and an enormous spectrum of differentiated expressive possibilities on the basis of exquisite craftsmanship: a rather small organ, but with impressively large potential. This corresponds to the importance of the place for Karlsruhe and the evangelical state church in Baden. The small church received its present form, restored after the destruction of the Second World War, in the 1770s. After the castle church it was the first sacred place of the city founded in 1715. In this Album, church music director Christian-Markus Raiser presents which sound spheres can be illuminated on the new organ. The program, with the powerful adjective “fanned out” – an allusion to the layout of Karlsruhe unfolding around the castle and the position of the small church on a beam of this fan – uses German organ music between 1750 and 1915 as an example to portray the multifaceted expressive possibilities of the instrument – from the subtly floating Pianissimo to the voluminous gesture of dominance.
