Christian Thielemann’s landmark Bruckner cycle with the Vienna Philharmonic continues with Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony on Edition Nowak. Sony Classical releases the Symphony No. 9 in D minor WAB 109, the sixth part of the complete recording of all Bruckner symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Christian Thielemann, the orchestra’s first Bruckner cycle under a single conductor.”The claim that this orchestra is basically the only true original-sound ensemble for Anton Bruckner’s music should remain undisputed,” raves “Die Presse.” The Vienna Philharmonic has premiered four of Bruckner’s nine symphonies. Since the premiere of the Second Symphony in 1873, they have maintained a special relationship with the music of the Austrian composer. With the Vienna Philharmonic, Thielemann has come very close to the ideal Bruckner sound: full, warm, with the finest gradations and richest colors, clear without sounding harsh, and well-contoured without seeming edgy. Only a few conductors achieve a comparable long breath full of sublimity and are able to use the singular beauty of sound of the orchestra as well as the special acoustics of the Vienna Musikverein in a way that is appropriate for the work.

The critics wrote enthusiastically: “Christian Thielemann develops … an overall almost feverish atmosphere. It is a tremendous seething, which he insistently stages in the swaying back and forth of forced rhythms, warm cantilenas and abrupt outbursts.” (AUDIO, 5 stars for Bruckner’s 2nd Symphony). “Simple and heartfelt, without false pathos, Thielemann brings out the grandeur and sublimity of this music.
