Christoph Pepe Auer was not allowed or could not play several times during the past years. First it was a mountain accident, then an operation that prevented him from taking his instruments at hand. For a musician, this is a punishment, through no fault of his own, and therefore all the more incomprehensible. But it is also a task. Because a striking cut in an artist’s biography can also lead to more clarity: “I’ve been working on sound. There should be no bass in my current band. The idea was a form of permeability, like emerging from the water, which clears your head. In addition, I wanted to play double bass clarinet, which also means working with a sound that had not been used much before.“From this follows White Noise in its current form. The quartet is multi-colored, but has a transparent cast. On the one hand, the pianist Michael Tiefenbacher is Auer’s finely balanced counterpart in terms of chamber music, harmonically just concrete enough to form a framework that gives support to the music. His additions with sometimes charmingly retromodern sounding synthesizers are tonal anchors in a pre-digital time. They fit in with the idea of a natural flow of the pieces, to which Clemens Sainitzer’s cello in turn ties in. His instrument is a link in chamber music as well as in the experimental. He does not even have to operate these sound forms in detail in order to create a feeling of openness when listening. But Sainitzer can also integrate improvisation as a soloist, a wide range of possibilities to get close to music.
