Dialect is a new collaboration between electric bassist Claire Cross and pianist Harry Cook. Focusing on the unique timbral blend of acoustic piano and electric bass, this project draws on the couple’s interest in classical, new minimalist, and improvised music. The album includes pieces inspired by the Australian wilderness, meditations on travel and isolation, and introspective explorations of the couple’s own personal and musical relationship. The album is the fruit of intimate time spent alone together in the musicians’ cottage in beautiful, remote Bundanon, each reflecting deeply on the other’s instrument: how it is designed, the shapes it can make, exploring what is possible without preconceptions. It is also an acknowledgement of the changing nature of jazz itself, of the fluid nature of genre labels and the rich potential for cross-pollination.
Claire Cross is an award-winning electric bassist and composer whose work focuses on creating immersive and ambiguous worlds, drawing on influences of folk, minimalism, jazz, and chamber music to create deeply textured and transfixing soundscapes. Pianist Harry Cook is equally at home in the worlds of classical and popular music, having worked with artists including The Tesky Brothers, Dorsal Fins and Packwood. Together, they blend and interweave the textures and timbres of the piano and electric bass, reframing the possibilities of this unusual combination through immersive compositions that draw deeply on influences including Skúli Sverrisson, Luke Howard, Nils Frahm and Christopher Hale.
