Cocomi selected ten classical masterpieces that she loves for her debut album de l’amour, including Massenet’s ‘Méditation’ from Thaïs, Fauré’s ‘Sicilienne’ and Gounod’s ‘Ave Maria’, which were arranged by Japanese film composer Takatsugu Muramatsu.
Features David Garrett, Ray Chen and Miloš: Cocomi collaborated with 8 renowned classical musicians on de l’amour including David Garrett, a star violinist whose work spans from classical music to rock, violinist Ray Chen, described as, “the ray of sunshine in the violin world,” by The Times and guitarist Miloš, described by The New York Times as, “One of the most exciting and communicative classical guitarists today.”
“I had the privilege of collaborating with some of the greatest classical players in the world today,” said Cocomi. “It was truly a wonderful experience that I will cherish forever. I hope you will rediscover the fun and beauty of classical music.”The album’s title de l’amour, chosen by Cocomi, means ‘of love’ and was inspired by Poulenc’s song ‘Les Chemins de l’amour’ which is featured on the recording.
Cocomi started playing violin and piano at the age of three and flute at eleven. She has attended masterclasses with Vladimir Ashkenazy and Emmanuel Pahud, and studies flute with Hiroaki Kanda, principal flutist of the NHK Symphony Orchestra. Last year Cocomi played flute on Chad Lawson’s composition ‘Stay’ which was featured on the World Sleep Day playlist. In January 2021 she was a featured soloist in the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Year Concert 2021. Cocomi grew up listening to different styles of music from an early age and one of her dreams is to spread the joy of classical music.
Poulenc, also known for his flute sonatas, is one of my favorite composers. The lyrics of “Love Lane,” which describes how beautiful the memories of spending time with a loved one were, are very much in line with this album, which is full of dreamlike encounters and wonderful experiences during the production process, and I thought it would be an appropriate title. I also selected other songs that are essential to who I am, and that I am very passionate about.
The recording was performed by Alexander Gajev (piano), Nieuw Nieuw (piano), and other star performers from Japan and abroad, bringing out Cocomi’s unlimited potential.
The day we recorded “Lane of Love” with Haruma Sato (cello) and Miyushi Kaneko (piano), I couldn’t sleep because I couldn’t contain my excitement after going home.
I was so excited that I couldn’t sleep at home. David Garrett played Massenet’s “Meditation de Thais” and Ray Cheng played Kreisler’s “The Joy of Love” remotely, as if by magic. I will never forget the way he played the violin together with me as if by magic. Tomohiro Ushida instantly understood my intentions and played the piano perfectly.
And in Faure’s “Sicilienne” with Mr. Milosz, it was a great feeling to be able to challenge myself to create my own unique music while not interrupting his guitar playing. I hope you will also look forward to the innovative arrangements of Saint-Saens’ “The Swan” and other pieces that create a positive atmosphere.
