While new song forms are emerging all over the world in the 20th century – songs and hits in jazz, rock and pop – the classical art song in the tradition of the 19th century is coming under pressure. A female singer, a male singer, a piano, poems of love and death and a romantic tonal language: the leading art form of the bourgeois salon is increasingly becoming a musical niche for lovers and freaks. The heyday of the European art song, which began in the middle of the 18th century, came to an end at the beginning of the 20th century. But the composers Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály took a different path: they renewed the art song by returning it to its origins, the folk song.

The most fascinating thing about the work of these two musicians is not just their painstaking ethnomusicological field research, through which they preserved Hungarian folk music for all time. Rather, they succeeded not only in tracking down, recording (as best they could at the time) and notating this music, but also in allowing it to inspire their own compositions. In the 20th century, when many musicians, mostly for political reasons, wore the mantle of folk music, Bartók and Kodály created a real folk art that did not pander, did not simplify, but spoke of feelings that directly touched its listeners.
