Without causing a fuss, Damien Jurado refines his art, album after album. Since the end of the 90s, this artisan of both original and modern folk from the rainy Seattle creates unique music. His songs are just as realist and introspective as they are exuberant, sometimes frightening. More meditative than ever, his 2019 work is one of his most exposed. Alone with an acoustic guitar, which he uses sparingly, Jurado expresses himself in a totally intimate environment; it is a little like his early work. In an ultra-connected world where no one pauses to take a breath, Jurado’s pure and beautiful folk provides us with a much-needed escape. The album detoxifies and evokes an ambiance that echoes clearly the loss of Richard Swift who in 2018 passed away at only 41 years old. The two worked together on many occasions, Swift pushing Jurado to develop the instrumentation in some of his productions. In the Shape of a Storm is not only a work of homage and a hard-hitting Requiem Mass. It is rather proof that one can, again and again, make sparks with one’s voice, a guitar and a few words that are crafted with care. Intense. – Marc Zisman
