You can’t get Deeper by standing still. That’s by design, says Nic Gohl of the Chicago quartet. “Does it feel good when you hear this song? Does your body want to move to it?” He asked himself those questions as he and bandmates Shiraz Bhatti, Drew McBride and Kevin Fairbairn wrote and recorded their third album, “Careful!” which is also their debut on Sub Pop.”I wanted the songs to be interesting, but in a way that a two-year-old could sing along to,” Gohl says. It’s basically pop music This “basically” works pretty well, as fans of 2020’s “Auto-Pain” might guess. On “Careful!” they don’t reinvent their sound, but test its limits. If you want, you can hear echoes of David Bowie’s “Low” in the snapping rhythm and gray synths of “Tele,” but you can also hear a bit of “Auto-Pain” in the nailed-down, dabbing lines spit out by Bhatti’s drum programming and McBride’s synthesizer. “Fame” seems to stumble together and almost fall apart, the turned-up noise making the beat seem maniacal and a little invincible, the whole a series of short, choppy, autonomous gestures that have become Deeper’s trademark.
