Great works of art outstrip their creator. Infused with substance unsuspected at their inception, they elicit intellectual and emotional perceptions in successive generations, gradually becoming a touchstone. Operating into the present, they pose real questions. Journeying through time, they abolish time and continue to resonate, fully and validly, in a world inconceivable at the time of their creation.Just so, the works of Franz Schubert were born and are reborn. That is especially true of the last three piano sonatas, no. 21 D. 958, no. 22 D. 959 et no. 23 D. 960, overlooked for the entire 19th century. They have neither the radiant perfection of form and material of Mozart’s, nor the experimental boldness — sometimes in too brief a time span — of Haydn’s. They have nothing of Beethoven’s tautly powerful language, authoritatively defining a dense and concrete realm of expression that reassures even in the most extended forms, like the Sonata no. 29 op. 106 “Hammerklavier”.
