Before the advent of recordings, playing duets was a popular social activity. This disc contains what an afternoon of music making between two string players in the 1790s might have included.
The duos for violin and viola K. 423 and K. 424 are two of Mozart’s most brilliant and inventive chamber compositions. Spirited repartee, seamless melodic handoffs, delicate textures, canonic passages, harmonic tensions, and mischievous silences engage the ear and keep the players on their toes. Mozart’s ingenuity is especially apparent in the closing movement of K. 424. A jaunty, duple-metre theme undergoes seven permutations in mood, articulation, and even metre, as the melody unexpectedly transforms into a brisk waltz.
