With her recording of the baroque opera “L’Huomo” – a “Festa teatrale” with a libretto by Margravine Wilhelmine (Frederick the Great’s favorite sister) and music by Andrea Bernasconi – Dorothee Oberlinger has once again made a sensational discovery! “L’Huomo” was premiered in 1754 on the occasion of Frederick II’s visit to the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth; more than two hundred years later and after years of intensive research, Dorothee Oberlinger and her Ensemble 1700 and an excellent cast of soloists performed the opera there again in 2023 “with verve and colorful splendor” and provided “pleasurable hours of opera” (Opera!), from which the world premiere recording of the work emerged.Wilhelmine von Bayreuth, the sister of Frederick II of Prussia, was the librettist of “L’Huomo” (ambiguously: The Man or the Man) and commissioned the then Munich Vice-Kapellmeister Andreas Bernasconi (1706-1784) to set the text to music. The plot explores the interplay of good and evil forces, which are expressed by the protagonists Animia and Anemone, the female and male souls. The opera is characterized by a great variety of forms – with dramatic accompanied recitatives, large ensemble tableaux and arias between baroque, gallant style and sensibility. It thus contrasts tragic and humorous elements in a wonderful way. In addition, dances from Carl Heinrich Graun’s “Armida” have been specially reconstructed and inserted in place of the lost dances.

The live performances at the Potsdam Festival in the summer of 2023 were praised by the tagesspiegel: “One would almost think that Dorothee Oberlinger, who often conducts her beautiful-sounding twenty-piece orchestra from the wrist without a baton, translates the double meaning (of the opera) into her own alternation of tenderness and pathos, channeled through seconds of abrupt pauses. A finesse that all eight singers take up at all times. Philipp Mathmann as the male soul Anemone is a countertenor of great radiance, the good spirit of Francesca Benitez sings crystal-clear coloraturas like a queen of the (dawning) night. Alice Lackner’s melting alto and Maria Ladurner’s female soul Animia are completely enchanting in their arias and cavatinas, Florian Götz is full of cleverly tamed power as the bass-baritone Prince of Hell, and Simon Bode (…) surprises with little comedic interludes as Cupid.”
