The title of the album “Suoni Amorosi” by the Duo Gioco di Salterio means “loving sounds” and so does the music on this album. The duo Birgit Stolzenburg and Hans Brüderl play together eight stringed instruments with discoverable and melodious music from the Middle Ages to the High Baroque. Besides the salterio, the baroque form of the dulcimer, the dulce melos, the double bass dulcimer, the renaissance guitar, vihuela, renaissance lute and theorbo can be heard
The Salterio was widespread in the 18th century, especially in Italy and Spain, and is a remnant of the great wealth of Renaissance instruments. Particularly in the “Aria Amorasa” and “Aria Allegra” by Nicola Matteis (died 1713) and in the Sonata in E minor by Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713), the Salterio spreads its finest and most emotional sound spectrum full of tenderness and cheerful serenity
In the pieces of the Spanish Diego Ortiz (1510-1570) and Luis de Narváez (1505-1549) and the French Adrian Le Roy (ca. 1520-1598) the expressive sounds of the vihuela, the dulcimer and the renaissance guitar can be heard. In “Canton Terza” by Bartolomeo Selma y Salaverde (1595-1638) and Bernardo Pasquinis (1637-1710) Sonata in D minor, the duo succeeds in combining powerful, affective elements with quiet, sustained passages on the Renaissance lute, theorbo and double bass dulcimer
An album full of music worth discovering, which puts the listener in a very special, relaxed mood.
