There is a method to Dustin Wong’s madness & cyclical cohesion in the seemingly swirling chaos of his new album for Hausu Mountain. Peppering the delightfully unhinged, psilocybin swayed electronica with warm & playful percussion, he also effortlessly threads some ambient Americana & good natured new age nods through one of the freshest, freakiest yet friendly electronic LPs I’ve heard in a while. As with all creative endeavors from Dustin Wong, the journey between any two points is endless and ever-changing. A trip to the market crawls slowly as points collapse into one another and a trek across an entire country could last mere moments once your sense of narrative is lost. That’s the goal here: to relent both sense and sensibility since they will return anew; that’s why the record is a love story. Perpetual Morphosis does not promote silliness or nonsense, however. Worlds within worlds can be—and in the case of “Audhumla Thaw” should be—taken as seriously as you wish. Like traveling through a computer’s inner workings as a shrunken being, the way you navigate directs your results. Do not expect the unexpected unless you deign to reign in the particulars. Follow the elegant stumbler through their atelier. Eat on the boat floating down the memory river. Wong’s outputs always arrive at discovery. If you discover nothing all the same, so be it! Thus, morphosis.
Perpetual Morphosis as a title, like the record itself, tracks granular, cellular, even atomistic movement. Existence and change interlock with or without us so the importance of recognition begins anew with each Wong case study. Press play again for best results. Beautiful shine and future composite optional but recommended. You may never arrive, which means you’ve seen the void and know it to be as safe as land. Therein lies the beauty of Perpetual Morphosis; the wry look you give to those who veer from paths is the same as ignoring them altogether even as you attempt both. Orihime and Hikoboshi approve; their love story is ours and written just beyond their stars.
