Lyricism and Confidence – Cellist Edgar Moreau with Works by Weinberg and Dutilleux.
“His sound is superb, his phrasing delightful, and the intensity of his performance is enhanced by the immediacy of his presence in the soundstage,” Grammophone Magazine already wrote about Edgar Moreau’s previous album on Erato. Now the cellist, together with the WDR Sinfonieorchester conducted by Andris Poga, releases a recording of works by the Pole Mieczysław Weinberg and his contemporary Henri Dutilleux.Weinberg’s style is often compared to that of his mentor Dimitrji Shostakovich, although unlike his mentor, Weinberg always wove a spark of hope into his works. Although written in 1948 during Stalin’s restrictive regime, dance-like sequences shimmer through again and again in his Cello Concerto in C minor, Op. 43. A confidence that was to be rewarded, at least with regard to this work: in 1957, a few years after Stalin’s death, the concerto was finally premiered. None other than the legendary Mstislav Rostropovich was the first to play it. Probably the most famous cellist of his time, he also launched Henri Dutilleux’s Cello Concerto. The epithet Tout un monde lointain (“A very distant world”) points to the composer’s source of inspiration: Charles Baudelaire’s volume of poetry Les Fleurs du Mal. Dutilleux took a different one of the sensual poems as the basis for each of the five movements.
