Hawkins came from a family with a strong musical background. As a seven-year-old, he accompanied his family’s gospel choir on the piano throughout their performances. In May 1967, he formed the 46-person (ages 17 to 25) Northern California State Gospel Choir. This choir needed money to travel to the Annual Youth Congress of the Churches of God in Christ in June 1968 in Washington, D.C. The choir therefore asked Century Record Productions to make a recording of their choir singing. With $1,800 saved, they financed the recording of the gospel LP Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord at the Ephesian Church of Christ in Berkeley, with a print run of 500 copies. Using an antiquated Ampex two-track tape recorder (eight-track equipment was modern), 8 church songs were recorded with only piano, bass and drums, lead singer Dorothy Combs Morrison singing in an empathic throaty alto voice. Among them was the title Oh Happy Day, which has long been in the public domain.
Edwin Hawkins Singers (1970)LaMont Bench owned the small Pavilion Records record company in Oakland. He obtained permission to press 1,000 more copies for commercial sale. Only 600 copies of these were sold. One came into the hands of radio DJ Abe “Voco” Kesh at KSAN FM in San Francisco in February 1969. The station was known as an underground station, but Kesh decided to give Oh Happy Day some intense airplay. San Francisco station KOIT also adopted the song into its playlist. Neil Bogert of Buddah Records heard the record on the radio and signed a distribution deal with Pavilion Records. The gospel choir was marketed by Buddah Records and renamed the Edwin Hawkins Singers. Oh Happy Day was pre-released from the LP as a single and released in April 1969 as Oh Happy Day / Jesus, Lover of My Soul (Pavilion 20001). The single received a Top20 recommendation in the April 19, 1969 issue of Billboard. It reached both the U.S. Rhythm and Blues (#2) and U.S. Pop (#4) charts as a massive crossover hit, selling one million copies in just two weeks since its release. After its release in the UK on May 18, 1969, it reached #2 on the charts there. On June 3, it was awarded the Gold Record by the RIAA, becoming the first certified single in the gospel sector. In total, 7 million records were sold worldwide and 4 Grammy Awards were given in the USA. In Germany and Switzerland, it even reached number 1 in the national charts.
