Elizaveta Ilyinichna Leonskaya (born November 23, 1945, Tbilisi) is a Soviet and Austrian pianist and teacher.
Born on November 23, 1945 in Tbilisi in a family of Polish and Russian (on the father) and Jewish (on the mother) origin; parents evacuated to Tbilisi from Odessa with the outbreak of the war . She gave her first concert with an orchestra at the age of 11, a solo concert at the age of thirteen.
In 1964, she entered the Moscow Conservatory (class of Yakov Milstein).
During her studies, she received several prizes at major international competitions: George Enescu (Bucharest, 1964), Margarita Long (Paris, 1965), Queen Elizabeth (Brussels, 1968). She played Mozart sonatas arranged by Grieg for two pianos with Svyatoslav Richter, who had a decisive influence on her development as a pianist.
On November 29, 1978, while on tour in Vienna, she announced that she had decided not to return to the USSR. According to other sources, the departure documents were prepared in advance, although in a very short time (literally a week), and friends who came shortly before her departure for her last birthday managed to say goodbye to her.
In June 1986, while in France, Elizabeth Leonskaya met Joseph Brodsky, who later dedicated two poems to her: “Bagatelle” (1987) in the book “Urania” and “In the air — severe frost and needles …” (1994) . According to Leonskaya herself, of Brodsky’s friends, she was one of the last to see him alive — the day before his death.
With the support of Elizabeth Leonskaya, two books of poems by Marina Georgadze were published: in 1996 — “The Route”, and in 2002 – “In Black and White”.
Lives in Vienna, performs concerts, teaches. Among her students are Kaspar Franz, Anika Vavich, Markus Hinterheuser.
