Éric Barret is a rare musician: in terms of talent, but also because of the parsimonious nature of his record productions. We will remember, for example, his participation in the first ONJ under the direction of François Jeanneau, an orchestra that he would return to a few years later for an ONJ Express led by Didier Levallet this time. In the meantime, he had made his mark in a trio with his two associates Henri Texier and Aldo Romano. We must also remember several important records: a first quartet in 1991 (with Marc Ducret, Hélène Labarrière and Peter Gritz); New Shapes in 1999, with three other high-flying partners (Sophia Domancich, Riccardo Del Fra and Simon Goubert). The following year, the drummer formed a duo with the saxophonist for a Linkage, heir to a few games of this type, the most famous of which is undoubtedly Interstellar Space, recorded in 1967 by John Coltrane and Rashied Ali. We won’t forget My Favorite Songs in 2004, a new septet adventure in which we met some (future) leading musicians like Airelle Besson (trumpet) or Benjamin Moussay (keyboards), for a brief visit review of some heartfelt songs. Ni Quiet Place in 2013, in duo with guitarist Jacques Pellen. A formula which also reminds us that Éric Barret is a partner of choice within another duo, the one he forms with the pianist Alain Jean-Marie.A rare musician, an excellent teacher and a discreet man, such is the one we find in a trio for a disc published by Jazz Family whose title, Work In Progress, is also that of an atypical formation, already spotted here in 2011: saxophone , piano, drums. No double bass therefore, and a particularly crucial role given to the piano, that of Emil Spanyi whose left hand does not risk boredom (listen to his wonderful work on the title composition), even if it is perfectly supported by the abundant playing by Gautier Garrigue (Henri Texier’s regular drummer) and by the saxophone itself which does not hesitate to exercise a rhythmic function when necessary. Recorded live at the Dunkirk Jazz Club in June 2022, this record is a lesson: that of a jazz of conversation and imagination, where improvisation – Éric Barret, it must be emphasized, is one of the most exciting improvisers there are – occupies a central place and is structured around a multiplicity of formulas. In trio, but also in solo and especially in duo: saxophone / piano, saxophone / drums, piano / drums. All combinations are tested during this concert. The intensity that reigns for more than an hour does not weaken for a single moment.
If Éric Barret does not abuse the recordings, at least he nourishes them with free and vibrant music. The musicians take the time necessary to establish a language of great expressiveness. This is jazz in all the strength of its history, with its references (the most notable being that of John Coltrane), but also that of its present, through the life with which it is full. This is an essential vibration that this record perfectly transmits to consume without moderation.
For this new formation, Éric Barret brought together two musicians who are very active on the current European jazz scene: Emil Spanyi (piano) and Gautier Garrigue (drums). The repertoire is written by the saxophonist for this trio with unusual instrumentation. Improvisation and interplay, a permanent exchange between the musicians, remain the key words of this orchestra, where, as its name indicates, the music is always under construction.
