Out Late by pianist Eric Scott Reed is a vibrant jazz album capturing New York City’s late-night energy. Featuring Nicholas Payton (trumpet), Eric Alexander (tenor saxophone), Peter Washington (bass), and Joe Farnsworth (drums), it boasts a stellar lineup. Reed describes the album as reflecting the unique nightlife and vibrancy of NYC. The title Out Late also nods to Reed’s personal journey of embracing his sexuality later in life. This openness, following his 2023 album Black, Brown and Blue, has brought new freedom to his music. Reed added his middle name, Scott, to mark this new chapter. The quintet includes longtime collaborators, creating a collaborative, flowing session. Reed brought sketches, letting the music evolve organically with the band’s input. Every track is a first take, prioritizing passion and feeling over perfection. Recorded live in one room without headphones or overdubs, it echoes vintage jazz sessions. Tracks were cut fresh after brief rehearsals, preserving raw energy. Reed quotes Coleman Hawkins: “If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.” The album balances virtuosity with emotional depth, evoking classic jazz recording vibes. It reflects both the spontaneous NYC jazz scene and Reed’s mature artistry. Out Late is a powerful statement of personal and musical liberation.
