When it was time for Four Year Strong to prepare their sixth album, Analysis Paralysis, they needed some time to get back to their core core. Four Year Strong’s signature sound – pop-punk energy, deft riffs and biting hardcore spirit – brought them to the forefront of the underground in the late eighties. Vocalist/guitarists Dan O’Connor and Alan Day then completed almost 80% of the album within a month, such as the menacing “Aftermath / Afterthought”, where metal meets industrial. They fused burning hardcore rhythms with melodic 90s alt-rock (“uncooked”), tried their hand at raw reggae (“out of touch”) and fluctuated between vibe-heavy synths and thunderous breakdowns (“STFIL”).The result is an album that expands their classic sound in exciting ways – but for all that, it’s unmistakably themselves:
O’Connor and Day’s unmistakable vocals, perfectly supported by the rhythm section of drummer Jake Massucco and bassist Joe Weiss. This deep into their career, there’s really nothing that doesn’t sound like Four Year Strong when these four are involved.
