It is known that, as Adolph Deutsch said, good music cannot save a bad movie but it can make it more presentable. And it is known that the cinema is made up of a set of elements (script, interpretation, direction, costumes, music, sound …) that form a whole but that in few cases have sidereal distances in quality. And if, as is the case at hand, a composer has done his job well, he must not bear the guilt of the calamities of the film as a whole, although, of course, it is assumed that the defects of others weighed his or her own, while a movie is the sum of everything and music is part of that whole, from which it cannot be subtracted.
This is possibly the worst Spanish movie in many years. So bad that, for lovers of the extravagant, the underground and the geek it may even be a delight: a staging of laughter, made with chroma, virtual sets, flea market clothes, some interpreters (not all) of school function , a handful of multi-employed extras and wonderfully shabby scenes. It becomes as if a David Lean film was made by Ed Wood.
The composer’s music is wonderful, but it really is: it is pure, symphonic music, which tries to explain the story by taking it to levels of maximum drama. Its main theme is the music of the conflict, it is powerful and forceful and knows variations and transformations that underline the threat that hangs over the city. It is a music outside the walls that finally is also positioned on the side of the resistant. Next to her, a beautiful romantic theme that is in the antipodes of war music and that, joining the lovers, also exposes in an intelligent and subtle way the fatality to which they seem condemned, although there are elements of hope. In the set a moderate Rotian tone is breathed, although it is only a reference in which Williams could also be included. And it is a music of clear Mediterranean aroma, close and organic.
Certainly the context and the reality in which this delicious music is inserted makes your dream become a nightmare, because it also has some problems with the assembly and some dispersion in other subjects. But even if it is because it is the best soundtrack in the worst film that has been made in a long time it is also worth appreciating it within the film. Gerard Pastor is young and good, and we must not forget that such extraordinary composers as John Scott have seen how much of his excellent creations have been for similar infamies.
