Travel diary of a special kind: with” Travel Diaries ” the Munich Goldmund quartet celebrates its tenth concert anniversary – and takes the listeners on a very personal journey through time. In the luggage: works by Wolfgang Rihm, Fazıl Say, Bryce Dessner and others.
Four friends who go on a big journey: this is how the best stories often begin. This includes Florian Schötz, Pinchas Adt, Christoph Vandory and Raphael Paratore, who gave their first major concert as a Goldmund quartet at Munich’s Prinz-regententheater about ten years ago. Since then, they have made stops in a variety of countries and concert halls – and have become one of the most renowned string ensembles of their Generation on this joint musical journey. That Schötz, Adt, Vandory and Paratore have remained true to their origins is also proven on their upcoming Album, which will be released on March 24 by EDEL / Berlin Classics: “Travel Diaries” is a collection of important moments from the last ten years.
The musical memories on “Travel Diaries” take the form of five contemporary works that particularly shaped the quartet and also reflect its courage for versatility: from Wolfgang Rihm to Fazıl Say to Bryce Dessner, composers are represented who offer completely different approaches to music and thus capture the multifaceted nature of contemporary classical music in a unique way. Rihm’s String Quartet No. 1 4 represents, for example, a particularly theoretically founded current of the avant-garde, which technically demands a great deal from the musicians, while Fazıl Says “Divorce” demands above all emotional devotion. The” Commedia dell’arte III “by Ana sokolovič resembles a kind of impromptu theatre piece with playful and imaginative sound elements; Bryce Dessner, as an artist at the interface between Pop, Rock and classical music, once again brings his very own style worlds into his composition” aheym”.
Personal encounters between the quartet and the composers were also decisive for the selection of the works – for example, “the Smile of the Flamboyant Wings” by Dobrinka Tabakova is the first work commissioned specifically for the Goldmund quartet and the “Commedia dell’arte III” was created by the four musicians in collaboration with Ana sokolovič at the festival d’aix-en-Provence. Fazıl Say gave important impulses for the Interpretation of ” Divorce“; Wolfgang Rihm was also able to meet the musicians and present his work live. The compositions on “Travel Diaries” offer the Goldmund quartet the opportunity to fully express its strengths, as the audience and critics have already testified. For example, the Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote: “the three precious works from Ana Sokolovič’s “Commedia dell’arte III”seem to have been made for the art of characterization of the Goldmund quartet. […] With wit and dramaturgically effective use of post-classical playing styles [ … ] the pieces become a miniature farce between scheming servant, manipulative Signora and heated lovers.”For a Performance of Rihm’s String Quartet No. 4, the Goldmund quartet was awarded a special prize for the best Interpretation of a work of the 20th century at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition in 2018.
With “Travel Diaries”, The Goldmund quartet celebrates ten years full of challenges and successes, on an Album that with its emotional and tonal complexity will also challenge and enrich the listeners – and thus do justice to the spirit of adventure and cohesion of its performers.
