Starcatcher’s production-helmed by Grammy winner Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell) is more stripped-down than that of ‘The Battle at Garden’s Gate’, allowing the instrumentation to shine. Take the album’s haunting, elegiac first single, ‘Meeting the Master,’ which at first pairs rich, wistful acoustic guitars with Josh’s yearning vocals, before blooming into a classic Greta Van Fleet rock ‘n’ roll anthem with a majestic guitar solo and pummeling drums. Starcatcher is the sound of four musicians amplifying one another’s strengths, across snarling, barnstorming rock (‘The Falling Sky’), meditative, gnarled hard rock (‘Sacred the Thread’), acoustic-driven pastoral folk-rock (‘Farewell for Now’), and stinging psychedelic rock (‘The Indigo Streak’). Occasional organ or keyboard flourishes pop out of the mix, adding texture and melodrama.Just entering their late twenties, the Kiszka brothers and Danny Wagner are already adding a third LP to their discography, which began five years ago with the Black Smoke Rising EP. At the time, critics were divided. Some spoke of a pale copy of Led Zeppelin destined to be pigeonholed as caricatures, or just fizzle out, while others marvelled at the potential of this well-crafted 70s blues-rock revival, made credible by Josh’s (a Robert Plant look-alike) powerful voice. It has to be said that high-pitched voices this powerful, that hold steady at such extreme altitudes, aren’t a dime a dozen. What’s doubly impressive is that they don’t often come from fledgling 18 year old musicians.

Since then, the Michigan quartet have proved the early critics wrong. Greta Van Fleet has now earned stadiums and the approval of idols, including Plant himself. Written and recorded in Nashville, Starcatcher is produced by Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlisle, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit), a regular at the Grammy Awards in the country and Americana category. But the Americans have not changed tack. Here we find the hard rock DNA that has always guided them, with a few other welcome sensibilities, like the folk lulls of Farewell for Now, the blues harmonica of The Falling Sky and the urgency of Runaway Blues. “We didn’t really have to force ourselves or be demanding when it came to writing, because it all happened very instinctively. The album represents our point of view, and sums up how we feel as a group of musicians”, says Jake, the guitarist and twin brother to Josh. – Charlotte Saintoin
