So what we have here is the latest drop from Prah Records (Oliver Coates, Lung Dart), and it’s a collaborative LP between pianist Paul Jones and Steve Black – the latter of which you might know better as Sweet Baboo. On Clarinet & Piano: Selected Works Volume 1 they use (surprise surprise) clarinet and piano as the principal instruments in a set of reworkings of pieces by the likes of Roedelius and Robert Wyatt. In incorporating additional elements of mbira, electronics and drums machines, the pair have created an album of detailed, quietly stirring chamber music not unlike Mica Levi’s celebrated film scores.
