Country songstress Hailey Whitters has long been recognized as a master craftswoman, but Corn Queen, her highly anticipated fourth album, solidifies her status as a genuine star, one with the wisdom – and the guts – to trust her instincts as she blazes her own singular trail through the industry. Recorded once again in Nashville with longtime collaborator (and now-husband) Jake Gear, the collection is a rousing reflection on Whitters’ midwestern roots and the joys and struggles of small-town living. The writing is whip smart, full of clever wordplay and evocative storytelling, and the performances are utterly intoxicating, walking the line between classic and contemporary country with a healthy dose of bluegrass energy thrown in for good measure. After moving to Nashville from Iowa as a teenager, Hailey Whitters spent ten years writing songs—landing cuts on albums by Alan Jackson, Martina McBride, and Little Big Town. Her fourth studio album, Corn Queen, is a powerhouse showcase of her songcraft, which mixes fiction and autobiography in a near-perfect blend. The approach of producer (and also her husband) Jake Gear is sleek and shrewd on “White Limousine,” where Whitters sings of Palm Springs and the echo on her voice lets us know we’re not in Tennessee anymore. A galloping, drum-forward rock beat drives “Shotgun Wedding Baby” as Whitters turns the memorable couplet of “Love is love, drunk is drunk/ I’ve been madly in drunk, I’ve been loved as a skunk (hey!)” The horn-led “Wholesome” ventures into country funk. For her core listeners, Gear and Whitters dial it down to beer-and-pickup country in the title track, which opens with, “Pom-Pom Tammy in her single mom Chevy/ Fillin’ out her not-so-skinny jeans/ Paintin’ on her mascara in the rearview mirror/ A case of beer up in the baby seat.” Whitters can write a melodic hook and the number of hit-tunes-in-waiting gives Corn Queen its spunk. Hung on a gleaming descending chorus, “Wagon,” extols marital bliss. In “High on a Heartbreak” the melody is winsome and the words are memorable: “I’ve been bottling it up/ But now the bottom of the bottle’s got me up on this neon moon/ I got a miss you kind of rush/ Gonna let your memory roll over me/ Just like your hands used to do.” There is a veritable army of guest players on Corn Queen, and the inclusion of rising Americana superstar Molly Tuttle on clawhammer guitar in “Prodigal Daughter” is a notable touch. How many other records in Nashville history feature pennywhistle, jaw harp, synth, accordion, dobro, baritone saxophone, and a pair of clawhammer instruments in guitar and banjo? But out front always here is Whitters’ up-to-the challenge soprano. – Robert Baird
