Two illustrious composers at odds with their Requiem? When, in 1791, a 36-year-old Mozart composed the one that would remain unfinished due to his death, he did so in response to a commission from the eccentric Count von Walsegg. Mozart would never hear his music. At the time, Salieri was at the height of his glory at the age of 41, famed for his operas from Paris and Milan to Rome and of course Vienna, where he was Court Composer and Director of the Italian Opera. Having put an end to his lyrical career, in 1804 he composed his Requiem, which was strictly intended for his own funeral, where it was indeed played – in 1825. Hervé Niquet brings us these two monuments of Viennese liturgy with panache. Could Mozart have been imagining his own funeral when he composed his sublime Requiem? Is it wise to include Mozart’s Requiem with Salieri’s on the same CD? If that is the question, then this recording provides the answer. Whilst Salieri’s work appears much grander on this recording than his distorted 19th-century image seemed to suggest, this new release still offers a wonderful exploration of the divide between his immense talent and the inexplicable genius of Mozart.

The strangest thing is that, despite the six years between them, the two composers use an almost identical melodic and harmonic vocabulary. However, the way they use this vocabulary as an expressive tool varies enormously. Mozart’s violent manner of expression and unprecedented power juxtaposes Salieri’s comforting and often conventional smoothness, despite Hervé Niquet’s apparent desire for this interpretation to unify the two works.

Recorded in the generous acoustics of the Chapelle Royale de Versailles in November 2021, this new recording brings together the instrumentalists and singers of the Concert Spirituel, featuring soloists Valentina Nafornita (soprano), Ambroisine Bré (alto), Robin Tritschler (tenor) and Andreas Wolf (bass). The contrast between these Requiems is fascinating and transcends far beyond their individual qualities. – François Hudry
