The Ensemble Hofkapelle München under the direction of expert Rüdiger Lotter presents the first excellent and historically informed recording of the opera “Der Stein der Weisen oder: die Zauberinsel”. The opera is regarded as the forerunner of W. A. Mozart’s celebrated masterpiece “The Magic Flute”, with a libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder, who would later also write the libretto for “The Magic Flute”.This opera was written by not one, but four composers, including Mozart! It was only in 1996 that a copy of the score of “The Philosopher’s Stone” was rediscovered, in which the copyist named the authors of the respective compositions – a sensation! This led to the discovery, for example, that Mozart’s famous Cat Duet K. 625 was actually taken from the “Philosopher’s Stone”. The many musical and stylistic parallels between numerous passages from “The Philosopher’s Stone” and similar moments from “The Magic Flute” indicate that Mozart drew inspiration for his opera not only from his own ideas, but also from those of everyone else involved.

The story of the opera is based on a collection of fairy tales by Christoph Martin Wieland and tells of two feuding brothers, the demigod Astromonte, who rules over Arcadia, and Eutifronte, who rules over the underworld, as well as two lovers who get caught between the fronts. The solo roles are made up of a refreshing mix of well-known singers such as the star tenor Michael Schade, up-and-coming stars such as tenor Kai Kluge and baritone Jonas Müller and prizewinners of international competitions such as soprano Leonor Amaral. The numerous choral scenes in the work were performed by the KlangVerwaltung choir. An exciting and sonorous new recording of this little-known musical jewel!
