The brand-new self-produced album from multi-award winning Canadian / International vocalist Holly Cole.
The ensemble that Holly has brought together to help create and perform on Dark Moon includes long time live performance / recording mates, Aaron Davis (piano), George Koller (bass), Davide Direnzo (drums) and John Johnson (saxophone). Add to that the brilliance of sometime accompanist’s including guitar master and provocateur Kevin Breit and on harmonica two-time Grammy winner and original member of Bella Fleck and the Flecktones, Howard Levy and finally the wonderful three part 1950’s Nashville style harmonies of the Good Lovelies. Together they define the absolute best in “ensemble playing”!On Dark Moon, one of Canada’s greatest yet relatively unknown musical talents has assembled another hugely satisfying collection of covers, all refashioned in her signature minimalist style. Cole is that rare vocalist who can add to a well-worn classic, like the Henry Mancini treasure, “Moon River,” by leaning into every word, elongating phrases and making sure the beauty of the melody is clear and quintessential. Cole swings through “No Moon at All,” with guest Howard Levy (from Bela Fleck’s Flecktones) adding a harmonica solo. Best known as the singer whose 1995 album, Temptation, successfully reimagined songs by Tom Waits, on Dark Moon, Cole teases new meaning out of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s everlasting knockout, “Message to Michael,” the bluebird-populated story of a lover who’s been left behind because their beloved is more interested in fame. A smoky, serpentine take of “The Exciting Life” is every bit the equal of Julie London’s famous version. Bookending the moon theme is a slow, swaying, countrified version of the title track, a tune first recorded by singer and music business pioneer Bonnie Guitar (a.k.a Bonnie Buckingham). The most radical reshaping on Dark Moon is Cole’s slow, spare draw-pathos-out-of-every-word voyage through Marty Balin’s “Comin’ Back To Me,” first recorded by Jefferson Airplane. Supported by Aaron David, her longtime collaborator, on piano, as well as George Koller (bass), Davide Direnzo (drums) and John Johnson (saxophone), Cole shifts gears and adds a necessary dash of sass to “Kiss Me Quick,” a song once recorded by Elvis Presley. Fearless in her choices, Cole delivers another jewel in her piano and voice rendition of “Walk Away Renee” where the spare arrangement, focused like the entire album on the lower registers of her voice, highlights the tune’s gorgeous melody and inherent sadness. – Robert Baird
