Ibrahim Maalouf, born in Beirut and now residing in Paris, is a virtuoso of the quarter-tone trumpet, which enables him to work with the maqam, or system of melodic modes, in traditional Arabic music. He and his carefully selected powerhouse band pay tribute to one of the greatest Arabic divas of all time, Oum Kalthoum.
Of “Alf Leila wa Leila,” one of Kalthoum’s greatest hits, Maalouf explains, “This piece is one of the all-time classics that is celebrated across the Arab world, and yet it remains virtually unknown in the rest of the world. So this was an opportunity for me to present this symphonic masterpiece, which celebrates the voice of the Arab world’s most popular singer.” Maalouf is a gifted arranger full of surprises, and this is a great opportunity to experience a unique blend of jazz and Arabic musical tradition.
