In anticipation of the production in the new season, the world premiere of the audio recording of the opera Hercules in Love by Antonia Bembo (1640-1720) was released on the Opéra Bastille stage. However, there is a completely different composition here, and this makes the release a separate event.
Antonia Paduani was born in Venice in the family of a doctor. Since childhood, she studied music, but not from anyone, but from Francesco Cavalli. She married the nobleman Lorenzo Bembo. Apparently, the marriage was unsuccessful, because in 1677 she eloped to Paris with guitarist Francesco Corbetta. Despite such delicate circumstances, Antonia was accepted in Versailles as a singer and composer; Louis XIV even provided her with housing and a pension.

Bembo’s creative legacy includes chamber vocal and instrumental music, sacred and secular cantatas, and the opera L’Ercole amante (1707). Antonia used the same libretto by Francesco Buti as Cavalli (it is noteworthy that “Hercules in Love” was also written for the French stage). Bempo combined Italian and French styles of music in her work, which makes her compositions original.

The recording is presented by the German band Il Gusto barocco, known in Baroque circles by Jörg Halubek.The performance is very good; I would especially like to mention the German baritone Yannick Debus in the role of the main character.
