Since its early beginnings, organ writing has been characterized by the imitative and contrapuntal style, conducting melodic lines whose rigor well knew how to grasp the distinctive element of the instrument, emission that prevents the perspective differentiation of the different sound planes. The flowering on the Italian territory within the musical chapels of a compositional style of the highest artistic level involved since the beginning the organ, the only musical instrument allowed in places dedicated to rites and religious functions. It was used both in accompaniment and in transcription for the instrument of motets and vocal masses, sometimes even as a substitute for singing, a custom that gave life to the practice of alternatim, alternation between instrument and voice, “Ch’or Si or no s’intenon le parole” (Dante Alighieri, Purgatorio, IX If in the form of servitude to sacred singing the organ repertoire owes its debut, it soon emancipated from this through the flourishing of musical forms exclusively dedicated to Instrumental Performance – ricerca, Tiento, Toccata, Fantasia, intonation, Praeludium, Praeambulum – with a wealth of titles that sometimes translates equivalent forms of writing, some closer to the contrapuntal-imitative style, others to free invention, according to a style more similar to improvisation. It is to this second genre that the stluslus phantasticus refers, a musical gesture of great elasticity and executive freedom.
