On the new James Marriott album, he goes pop. At times, this comes off really well and lyrically, this album is great. I’ve also definitely warmed to his vocals in recent years. However, the issues here make me worried for the next one, even if it only has somewhat of an impact here. The melodies are getting old, the instrumentals are dry on a few songs and again, he remains inconsistent and it leaves me unsure if his potential ever gets fulfilled. “Plasticine” and “Food Poisoning” really aren’t great. Plus, the singles are the best songs and that is never a good sign as good as the singles are. However, most instrumentals are solid, James sounds solid, the writing is very good and while the melodies are kinda mid, this is a relatively good pop rock thing and ultimately, it’s fun enough even if it feels derivative. Looking back though, “Are We There Yet?” is better.
