“Jeannie Piersol is one of the enigmas of the San Francisco rock scene in the mid-1960s. Though little known, the singer hailed from the same south San Francisco community that produced key players in the Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Big Brother and other important members of the city’s future rock meritocracy.
Piersol was close friends with Grace Slick and her brother-in-law Darby Slick, and duetted with Grace in the early days of the seminal early SF band The Great! Society, before forming her own band, The Yellow Brick Road, which performed in the clubs and ballrooms of the burgeoning SF scene, including the legendary The Matrix.After returning from a stint in India studying sarod, Darby Slick transformed The Yellow Brick Road into a multiracial, psychedelic soul band that became known as Hair. This, in turn, led to Jeannie being signed as a solo artist to Cadet Concept, the hipster imprint of the venerable R&B label Chess Records. Slick and Piersol traveled to Chicago in 1968 to record with the master musicians of Chess, and the result was a hip blend of rock, soul and Indian influences.
