Two-time GRAMMY Award-winning recording artist, Academy Award-winning actress and Tony & Emmy Award- winning producer Jennifer Hudson is pleased to announce her first ever holiday album! The Gift of Love sees the genre-defining vocalist delivering classic covers and holiday originals that are sure to be listened to for years to come.Jennifer Hudson’s rousing 2021 version of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” proved to be an appetizer for The Gift of Love, released three years later as the singer’s first holiday album. Not counting the Respect soundtrack, it’s Hudson’s first album overall since 2014’s JHUD. Overseen by Ryan Tedder, who splits production duties with the likes of David Foster, Greg Phillinganes, Kirk Franklin, and James Poyser, the primarily festive set seems more likely to become an annual staple than mere product that fades away after one promotional campaign. It has all the trimmings that are to be expected from a holiday recording by a prominent powerhouse. There’s tastefully ornate framework with lavish strings and brass, plus robust gospel choirs, but not so much that the star is eclipsed. Hudson begins by revisiting “Hallelujah,” the modern Leonard Cohen standard she and Tori Kelly sang as a duet for the soundtrack of Sing, and it’s a grand entrance, the first five minutes and 15 seconds of which are an elaborate setup for Hudson to dazzle with a held note. She puts her all into the sacred “O Holy Night” and spiritual “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” and breathes new life into “Carol of the Bells” with South African a cappella group the Joy. Hudson is just as invested in the lighter material. The best of that portion is “Jingle Bells,” given a new arrangement that has a lot of spring in its step (though we’re not talking Alexander O’Neal’s “Sleigh Ride” here). A handful of originals, all co-written by Hudson, are also part of the program. “Santa for Someone” is an uptempo soul throwback about the pressures of gift-giving, while the statelier “Almost Christmas” is mostly gleeful narration from Common with Hudson enhancing the sentiments with graceful and romantic punctuation.
