American pianist and composer Joanne Brackeen has been called the “Picasso of jazz piano”, for her unique style and complex improvisations. Her work is at the forefront of what avant-garde jazz can be and she has long been one of the giants of modal, post-bop piano. Here Candid Records is proud to present the album as it was originally released, with original album title, original track running order and original album artwork. The recording has been remastered by legendary mastering engineer Bernie Grundman.
Pianist Joanne Brackeen’s debut album (after a barely documented period with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers) is a very impressive effort. Teamed with bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Billy Hart, Brackeen plays in a complex and already original style, interpreting four of her tunes plus “Nefertiti,” Miles Davis’s “Circles” and “Old Devil Moon.” Her chord voicings are thick and sometimes quite dense, but this music is strangely accessible.
